- (1843-1913)Born in Cork, the son of an Irish merchant and landowner, he was educated at Queen's College, Cork, and Trinity College, Dublin, from where he graduated in 1863. He was appointed professor of English literature at Trinity in 1867-a post he held till his death-and lectured at Oxford (1890-1893) and Cambridge (1893-1896). His critical strength was his ability to get inside the writer's mind rather than creating a record of personal impressions or opinions. In politics, he disliked Irish nationalism and fought vigorously against home rule. He was eager to help and encourage young men; house became an intellectual center. He died in Dublin. Some of his publications: Shakespeare: A Critical Study of His Mind and Art, 1875. Southey: A Critical Study of His Mind and Art, 1880. The Life of Percy Bysshe Shelley, 1886. Introduction to Shakespeare, 1893. Robert Browning, 1904. A Woman's Reliquary, 1913 (a book of poems written for his second wife, Elizabeth Dickinson). Some of his poems: "A Peach," "Brother Death," "Burdens," "Communion," "In the Cathedral Close," "In the Garden," "Love's Lord," "New Hymns for Solitude."Sources: A Treasury of Poems for Worship and Devotion.
